Deputies nab car theft suspect after dramatic chase into 'frozen swamp'
The Chisago County Sheriff's Office is celebrating the arrest of a suspected car thief following a high-speed pursuit on Thursday.
A Facebook post from the office lays out the blow-by-blow of the suspect's alleged crimes in comic fashion:
According to the post, the suspect stole a car in Minneapolis, then ended up in the Pine County area and stole gas from a gas station there, which triggered a call to law enforcement.
"Information was broadcast to Chisago County after it was learned that the suspect was southbound on I-35," and when deputies spotted the vehicle and attempted to pull it over, the chase began:
After a few miles of the vehicle failing to stop a CCSO deputy flawlessly deployed stop sticks and deflated all four tires. The suspect then made an unsuccessful getaway attempt on foot. CCSO Deputies chased him down on foot and utilized a bit of 4 wheel drive.
"Getting stuck in the field, jumping out of the stolen car and running away into a frozen swamp... Terrible idea," the sheriff's office says.
One of the sheriff's cruisers did get stuck in the snow, but a local farmer helped haul it out.
Nonetheless, it was a successful operation, and the suspect is now in custody.
The Chisago County leaves this advice for would-be thieves:
"Pro Tip: For those contemplating stealing vehicles in 2020- Gas stations tend to have awesome surveillance video. Motorola 800Mhz radios can connect to any cop in the state in a little under a second."
