A Cass County, North Dakota, deputy responding to a crash involving a cow was forced to shoot and kill the cow after it charged at him.

The cow had been hit by a car on Interstate 94 west of Fargo at about 3 a.m. Monday. When the sheriff's deputy tried to determine the owner of the cow, the animal charged at him and knocked him to the ground, WDAY reports.

The deputy got back up and was forced to shoot the cow when it charged him again, The Associated Press says. The cow died.

The deputy was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The driver of the car that hit the cow wasn't hurt, but the vehicle was damaged and towed away, WDAY says.

The owner of the cow hasn't been identified, Valley News Live says.

In 2012, there were 3,105 accidents involving animals, with only one fatality, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

In 2011, there were 126 vehicle crashes involving farm animals, 100 in 2010 and 134 in 2009, the state Department of Transportation says. For these years, motor vehicle vs. farm animal accidents were the second most common type of crash involving animals, behind accidents involving deer.
