Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign, a restaurant's future sits in limbo

Months after a crowdfunding campaign met its $60,000 fundraising goal, it's not clear if the funded project will even come to fruition anytime soon.

Chef Laura Bonicelli started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to expand her Bonicelli Fresh Meal Delivery business into a restaurant, with the hopes of opening Bonicelli Kitchen, a European bistro-style restaurant and takeout market, in northeast Minneapolis.

Before starting the campaign she had worked out most of the logistics, including signing a lease for the property at 1901 Fillmore St. SE, The Journal reports.

But now, months after raising enough money, it doesn't look like the restaurant will open at that location because the current property owners aren't able to fulfill their end of the lease.

Bonicelli addressed this in a post on her website this month, which thanked supporters for helping fundraise, saying she has explored "many options in an attempt to make things work," but ultimately it wouldn't make sense for the future of the company.

So now there are two options for the future of the restaurant, which had aimed to open back in June: The building could be sold to a new owner, which can decide whether or not to fulfill Bonicelli's lease, or she can explore a new location for the kitchen in the area, the post says.

Bonicelli says "this will all take time, but we have already begun the process."

As for those who supported the Kickstarter campaign, Bonicelli plans to fulfill the rewards that don't require the actual restaurant space.
