Nyquist facing major suspension after dirty high stick to Spurgeon's face

It's one of the most intentional-looking hits of malice you'll ever see.

Jared Spurgeon is lucky he's alright after he was stabbed in the face with a hockey stick on Sunday.

It happened when Detroit's Gustav Nyquist responded to a a cross check from Spurgeon with just under six minutes to play in the opening period. Nyquist claimed it was an accident, but anyone who watches the video can tell otherwise.

The slowed down version of the spearing makes it look like Nyquist was staring right at Spurgeon when he delivered the blow.

Nyquist wasn't ejected. Instead, he received a double-minor penalty. But the NHL has invited him in for an in-person hearing about the incident, which likely means a ban of at least five games.

"I’m just happy it didn’t go in my eye or something like that," Spurgeon said, according to Yahoo Sports.

Here's Nyquist claiming his stick got caught and he lost control of it. Sure, buddy.
