It's a popular destination for city-folk looking to escape to the lakes on summer weekends, and now Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, is set to get a multi-million hotel complex where they can stay.

St. Cloud-based company United Development Solutions is hoping to start work in May or June on a hotel and restaurant development near the lakeside beach and pavilion, in a project costing an estimated $11.3 million.

According to the company's website, the project would see the creation of a 70-bedroom Fairfield Inn & Suites hotel by Marriott, as well as a 4,000 square-foot restaurant and 9 condo units.

The city is around 45-miles east of Fargo, and in the summer months the area of awash with tourists spending their weekends on lakeside shores.

Doing more to cater for the crowd has been a part of the city's long-range plan since 2008, the Forum News Service reports, and the location for the proposed hotel, next to the city's pavilion, beach and Washington Park, is a desirable one.

The hotel will be situated on Washington Avenue, while diners at the planned restaurant will have a view of the lake, as it will front onto West Lake Drive.

"It's a showcase development, and it's just what we were looking for on this corner," Detroit Lakes Community Development Director Larry Remmen told the news service.
