No DFL endorsement for Minneapolis mayoral candidates, race still wide open

In a political season where DFL endorsements for Minneapolis citywide races have been hard to come by, not one of the six Democratic mayoral candidates garnered the party's stamp of approval Saturday.

As the Star Tribune reports, an arduous day of convention politics ended up ostensibly a tie, with no candidate able to achieve the 60 percent of the delegates threshold to secure endorsement.

In the end, there were two. Mark Andrew led on every ballot, eventually securing about 50 percent support in the fourth round of balloting, with about 1,100 total delegate votes, while Council Member Betsy Hodges took 44.3 percent.

Andrew, a former Hennepin County commissioner, took an early lead Saturday afternoon, according to the Star Tribune, capturing 42 percent of the delegate votes on the second ballot.

Following were Hodges, with 31.5 percent, and council member Gary Schiff, with 25.2 percent, on the second ballot; a candidate needs 60 percent of the votes to be endorsed.

Council Member Don Samuels, former Council President Jackie Cherryhomes and special education teacher Jim Thomas were all knocked out of contention after the first ballot, the Strib reports, with each getting less than 10 percent of the vote.

Of the six candidates, Schiff, Andrew and Hodges have pledged to abide by the party’s endorsement. Cherryhomes, Thomas and Samuels have not. Now it looks as though most of them, if not all, will stay in the race.

Earlier, the Associated Press reported the convention is the first big marker in a crowded race that's likely to stay that way until November. Because of the instant runoff voting process, which allows voters to choose more than one candidate by ranking them, there won't be a primary.

Up to 1,780 delegates were to vote Saturday. Winning the endorsement requires a 60 percent super majority, although the party has a history of not endorsing any candidate, MPR reported.

Also running is Cam Winton, a Republican running as an Independent, who's not seeking endorsement from any party.
