Documentary captures transformation of University Avenue

A working class avenue, the heart of the University of Minnesota and a diverse business corridor are some of the terms used to describe University Avenue between Minneapolis and St. Paul in a new documentary.

The Pioneer Press says a former Twin Cities Public Television executive, Peter Myers, takes a look at University Avenue's transformation over more than 50 years in his film titled: "University Avenue: One Street, A Thousand Dreams."

Before the 1960s, University was filled with streetcars and a premier shopping and entertainment destination -- "the place to be." Baseball fans flocked to Lexington Park to watch the St. Paul Saints take on the Minneapolis Millers.

The documentary will be premiered at a special gala Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. at Hamline University. Tickets ar $50 and can be reserved by calling the Midway Chamber of Commerce at 651-646-2636.

Three miles of University Avenue in St. Paul have been partially closed while construction continues on the Central Corridor light-rail transit project. Officials say the section will reopen Wednesday, meeting a Nov. 30 deadline.

In the end, the controversy over Cupcake was too much of a tempest in a teapot for owners of the popular pastry restaurant. After a year of fighting the city of St. Paul and neighbors over parking and and a liquor license, owner Kevin VanDeraa is pulling the plug on the Grand Avenue location. He is now headed to the Mall of America and will open the new shop next month, the Pioneer Press reports. VanDeraa says he lost $150,000 in an effort to bring the boutique eatery to the St. Paul area.
