Dog bites a woman, runs off

Police are asking for help as they try to find the animal.

Police are trying to find a dog that bit a woman without provocation and then ran off.

The woman was walking near Moorhead's St. Joseph Church Wednesday afternoon when she heard a dog barking, Moorhead police said. She turned and saw the animal approaching – it got close and bit the woman's calf, causing her to fall over.

She managed to fight off the dog, and fortunately only had non-life threatening injuries.

But the dog sprinted away, and she wasn't able to see where.

Now, police are trying to figure out whose dog it might be. The victim needs the dog's vaccination records, and investigators have "further questions."

The dog was described as about 2 feet tall and 3 feet long, with short hair – a combination of black, white and brown. It had a short tail and might have been a pit bull, but that's not for certain.

Anyone who knows of a dog like that in the area, or might have a tip, is asked to call the Moorhead Police Department at 701-451-7660.

Dangerous dogs and dog attacks

Under Minnesota law, if a dog attacks someone without being provoked, the owner of the dog is responsible for damages and covering the cost of any injuries.

A dog that's been deemed "dangerous" – because it has attacked someone unprovoked, killed a domestic animal, or is showing other signs – is supposed to be registered with the state, and have a microchip implanted. The owner has to follow specific regulations too.

Authorities can choose to put down the dog under certain circumstances, though the owner gets a hearing first.

The Centers for Disease Control says that around 4.5 million dog bites happen each year in the United States.

The agency says anyone approached by an unfamiliar dog should remain motionless. In the event of an attack that knocks you over, the advice is to curl into a ball with your head tucked and your hands over your ears and neck.
