Police in Morrison County, Minnesota are investigating how a dog that went missing from a local home ended up shot dead around 15 miles away.

The German shepherd went missing after being let outside to go to the bathroom on Christmas Eve morning by a resident in the Cushing area, south of Motley.

The resident searched for the dog, and later put a notice out on a missing dogs website.

A short time later, someone contacted the resident to say they'd seen a dog matching the description.

The dog was then found dumped on the side of the road in Todd County, northwest of St. Cloud, with police saying it had been shot and had its collar removed.

The dog didn't survive its injuries, with police saying it had been shot with a low-caliber gun.

Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at 320-632-9233.
