Dog who chewed off own tail to survive still not adopted 2 years later

A golden retriever whose story drew international interest when it was first broadcast still has not been adopted.

ABC 6 first reported the story back in 2013. Goldie was one of eight dogs abandoned by a previous owner; she was locked in a kennel, and spent nearly three weeks there without food. Ten years old at the time, she ate her own tail to survive.

She was eventually rescued and brought to the Humane Society of North Iowa.

The story drew a ton of interest initially, ABC 6 says in an update that aired Wednesday. The shelter's executive director, Sybil Soukup, told the station she got hundreds of phone calls and did international media interviews.

But after the first round of applications didn't work out (they received about 50 following the initial story), interest in Goldie has seemingly evaporated.

As of Friday, Goldie will have been at the shelter two years.

There hasn't been one application in 18 months, according to a listing on Susie's Senior Dogs.

The shelter knows Goldie is something of a tough sell.

She's 11 years old, doesn't do well with other dogs or cats, needs to go to a home with a fenced-in backyard, and isn't house-trained, the listing explains.

But the shelter says Goldie is healthy (she was at least 20 pounds underweight when rescued, the Globe Gazette says), energetic, and "has a wonderful disposition and personality. She seems to be a quick learner and eager to please."

They hope the new round of media attention helps find her a home to match.

“She still has quite a few years left in her, but frankly we’ve never had this happen to us before where a dog has stayed in our care this long," Soukup told KIMT.
