Domestic abuse homicides in Minnesota have reached a 20 year low, according to a report compiled by the Minnesota Coalition for Battered woman.

The Star Tribune says in 2012, at least 18 people, mostly women, have died as a result of domestic abuse. Between 1992 and 2011, the death toll has ranged from a low of 22 in 1996 to a high of 52 in 1993.

Rebekah Moses, program manager for the organization, tells the newspaper it's too soon to know if the new numbers signal a trend, but says better intervention strategies are helping both victims and families in domestic violence situations.

In 2008, Stearns County established the first program in the country that supervises the most dangerous repeat domestic violence offenders. KSTP reports the domestic violence court received national recognition as one of the 10 most innovative justice programs.

A rally is being held at the capitol on March 12 for "Action Day to End Violence Against Women."
