Don't get towed: Street sweeping begins in Minneapolis

Minneapolis residents and visitors, don't ignore those temporary "No Parking" signs that will be posted around town this week – or we'll see you at the city's impound lot.

According to the city's website, sweeping crews will go after the winter gunk on nearly 1,000 miles of streets starting Tuesday. The dirty job of removing sand, leaves and winter's detritus continues through May 8.

City and residential streets are swept completely curb to curb once in the spring and once in the fall. On the day the street is to be cleaned, parking is prohibited from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Temporary “No Parking” signs are posted at least 24 hours in advance to empty streets of parked vehicles. If you don't move, expect to have your car ticketed, then towed to the impound lot.

The Star Tribune noted crews began sweeping parkways and some commercial corridors last month, and alley sweeping began April 6. Crews sweep downtown streets at night, where "no parking" restrictions are posted for between midnight and 5 a.m.

The threats on the No Parking signs are no joke. In the fall cleanup during November of 2012, the Star Tribune reported more than 4,000 vehicles were ticketed and more than 2,700 were towed.
