'Don't normalize this': Minnesotans react to mass shootings in El Paso, Ohio

The massacres occurred within 24 hours of each other and left at least 29 dead.

With at least 29 people dead in this weekend's mass shootings, a number of prominent Minnesotans are calling for change in the way the nation regulates guns.

Less than 24 hours after a shooter opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, killing at least 20 people, a gunman in Dayton, Ohio, killed at least nine and injured 26 in the city's nightclub district

On Twitter, a number of Minnesota's elected leaders joined others across the nation in offering condolences, expressing shock, and arguing the need to "end the gun violence epidemic in our country," as Gov. Tim Walz put it:

Former Minneapolis mayor Betsy Hodges chimed in as well, offering condolences to the people of both El Paso and Dayton, and also emphasizing the gun issue:

This was a common theme among the Democrats, with Sen. Amy Klobuchar — who's also running for president — sharing part of a speech in which she says "we need to take on the NRA" to solve the problem:

It wasn't just Minnesota's politicians reacting, however. Singer Lizzo also tweeted about the shootings, saying that family members in Dayton had a "close call" but were okay:

"I feel completely helpless," she said, urging her followers to "make noise & bring awareness" of gun violence and vote.

"Don’t normalize this," she added.

According to Gun Violence Archive, there have been 251 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year — a number that has been widely reported and referenced on social media.
