The countdown is on for the first day of fall semester classes at Minnesota's state colleges, universities and technical schools. The academic year begins Monday for the schools in the MnScu system.

It was a busy weekend on campuses throughout the system, as thousands of students said goodbye to their parents then began the process of settling into dorms and apartments, and getting acquainted--or reacquainted--with friends and roommates.

The Marshall Indpendent carried a story about hundreds of students arriving on the Southwest Minnesota State University campus for "Mustang Move-in Day," with student athletes and volunteers lending a hand to help the annual set up in dorm rooms.

At St. Cloud State University, some 600 volunteers and staff helped direct traffic, assign dorm rooms, and move the students’ things into their new living spaces. WJON noted that nearly 2,000 new students arrived on the campus, starting on Thursday.

The St Cloud Times added that this year, SCSU changed its orientation, expanding the previous two-day schedule to a four day process for students to move into dorms, learn about courses and participate in school-sponsored activities before classes start.

The newspaper quoted university spokesmen, who said the four days "will provide more opportunity to deliver educational messages to students," including advice about safe choices.

Classes at the campuses in the University of Minnesota system begin the day after Labor Day.
