Dozens sickened in Mankato mystery illness

More than 50 people were sickened after attending events at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato last week. A spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health says the outbreak appears to be a norovirus.

The Mankato Free Press reports the outbreak happened in people in attendance at a Greater Mankato Growth event a week ago. More than 460 people participated in the event. The health department also received reports of people who contracted the illness after attending a civic center event for veterans last week.

Norovirus is spread through contact with fecal matter, a state health department spokesman said. It causes vomiting, nausea or diarrhea. The virus is the leading cause of food-borne illness outbreaks in Minnesota.
