Drink up! MSP is getting a direct flight to wine country
Wine lovers rejoice! Starting this summer you'll be able to fly right into the heart of Napa Valley.
Sun Country announced on Wednesday it is launching two new seasonal routes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. One to Austin, Texas, and the other to Santa Rose/Sonoma County, California.
Sonoma County and neighboring Napa Valley are home to some of America's biggest wine producers, with 60,000 acres of vineyards in Sonoma and 43,000 acres in Napa Valley, which is famous for its cabernet sauvignon.
Between the two areas, there are more than 600 wineries, and if you need a break from all that booze, San Francisco is about 40 miles down the road.
The nonstop service begins in late August and runs through early December, leaving MSP on Thursdays and returning on Sundays.
"The addition of Sonoma County to the family of Sun Country destinations gives our travelers a direct gateway to some of the wonders of California, from wine country to the beautiful redwoods," Zarir Erani, Sun Country Airlines President and CEO, said in a statement.
Don't forget Austin either. The hipster capital of Texas has become a major tourist destination in recent years thanks to its southern cuisine and a vibrant, cultural and music scene that has spawned festivals such as SXSW.
Delta currently offers daily flights between MSP and Austin, though it'll be interesting to see how the prices match up now the budget airline Sun Country has added the route.
The nonstop services to Santa Rosa/Sonoma County will be available from Aug. 24 through Dec. 3 and to Austin from Aug. 31 to Dec. 10.
