Drive-by shooting reported in Brainerd, teen victim admits to self-inflicted gunshot wound
A report of a drive-by shooting in Brainerd on Sunday afternoon turned out to be false, but not before police departments from Brainerd, Baxter, Crosby and Deerwood were called to the scene.
The drive-by was reported around 2 p.m. on the 1400 block of Norwood Street in southeast Brainerd, where police found a 17-year-old male with a single gunshot wound to his leg.
According to the Brainerd Dispatch, whoever reported the shooting included a generic description of a suspected vehicle. But the teenage victim later told police that he accidentally shot himself in the leg.
"During further investigation, the victim told officers the gunshot injury was a self-inflicted accidental discharge," said Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston in a news release. "The injury was not life-threatening and the victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
