The Orono man accused of doing shots and eating THC gummies before the fatal crash that killed Mack Motzko and Sam Schuneman posted bail and is out of jail.

James Blue, 51, posted $500,000 bail Monday in connection with the criminal vehicular homicide charges filed against him, according to online court records. He was released from the Hennepin County Jail just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, about seven hours after being taken into custody.

Blue had his first court appearance later that day. He did not enter a plea. An omnibus hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office charged Blue with four counts of criminal vehicular homicide. They allege he was driving more than 90 mph in a Bentley, with the  20-year-old Motzko and 24-year-old Schunemman in the car, just prior to the July 24 crash in Orono.

Motzko, the son of Gopher men's hockey head coach Bob Motzko, suffered critical injuries and died at the hospital. Schuneman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The charges say Blue's BAC was more than twice the legal limit. Hospital staff found marijuana gummies and "crushed up white pills and green capsules" in his pocket, and witnesses said they'd seen him eating the gummies and taking shots prior to the deadly wreck, according to the criminal complaint.
