Driver backs over people at Iowa parade, killing Minnesota woman

A 59-year-old Minnesota woman died in the incident.

A Minnesota woman was killed and three others were injured when they were struck by a vehicle at an Independence Day parade in Iowa. 

The deadly incident happened Saturday in Slater, Iowa, when a 75-year-old woman backed over several people while attempting to leave after the parade concluded, according to Iowa State Patrol. 

Four people were dragged under the vehicle, including 59-year-old Mary Nienow of Albert Lea, Minnesota, who died. 

Three others – a 67-year-old woman, 30-year-old and a 6-year-old child – were injured. The conditions of the injured weren't available Sunday, though the child was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines, according to the Ames Tribune

Witnesses told the Des Moines Register that bystanders helped lift the 2007 Hyundai Sonata to help free the victims, then aided with emergency medical attention before paramedics arrived. 

The crash happened around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Tama streets. The parade had just ended, witnesses told the Register. 

Slater is a town of about 1,500 residents, located between Ames and Des Moines.
