Driver cited in 6th crash along Green Line

There was another crash along the Green Line light rail route on Sunday.

KARE 11 reports that the collision happened shortly after noon at University Avenue and Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. No one was injured.

A news release from Metro Transit indicates that the driver of the car ran a red turn arrow while turning north onto Snelling, making the turn directly in front of a Green Line train. The light rail vehicle collided with the car in the intersection. Metro Transit Police cited the auto driver for an illegal turn and they continue the investigation of the incident.

The scene was cleared in approximately 30 minutes and the auto was towed from the scene.

The accident is the sixth since the new 12-mile, $1 billion Green Line that connects downtown St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis began testing earlier this year.

Metro Transit's OnTheGreenLine blog continues to urge motorists and pedestrians to take precautions around the trains, which travel along a busy urban corridor.

  • Trains don’t have steering wheels and can’t swerve out of your way.
  • Never try to beat a train through a light. The train will clear the intersection in a few seconds.
  • Trains can come on any track, at any time, from either direction. Don’t assume you know when and where to expect a train.
  • Trains move faster than they appear and they cannot stop as quickly as a car.
  • Unlike freight trains, you might not hear a light rail train approaching.

Metro Transit offers a YouTube video that emphasizes safety, produced like a television game show.
