A driver is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing into a lake.

The pursuit happened in Kandiyohi County at around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, when a deputy observed a vehicle traveling 96 mph on southbound U.S. Hwy. 71 at 66th Ave. NE, north of Willmar.

A pursuit started, but ended when the deputy lost sight of the vehicle as it went westbound on County Road 25.

However, the deputy then found that the vehicle had gone off the road and entered Kings Lake.

The driver was able to get out of their vehicle and swim towards shore, and then taken into custody by awaiting police.

There was nobody else in the vehicle.
