Driver killed after truck is hit by freight train south of Moorhead

A driver has died in a "fiery crash" after a truck was hit by a freight train south of Moorhead Saturday.

KFGO reports that the incident happened around 9 a.m. east of Highway 75 on 60th Ave. S. when the vehicle was hit by a empty BNSF train, dragged "about a third of a mile down the track," according to Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist.

Valley News Live reports that two witnesses saw the truck go through the crossing arms after they were down – with the train unable to stop in time.

The truck was "fully engulfed in flames," the TV station notes, and the position of the car once the train had stopped meant firefighters couldn't immediately reach it to put the blaze out.

"It took a little while to get to where the vehicle was," Bergquist told KFGO said. "We finally got a smaller truck down there and were able to put it out."

"It appears that there is one victim in the vehicle," he told the Fargo Forum, and investigators still in the process of trying to identify them.

One of the crossing arms appeared to have been sheared off, the newspaper notes.

The sheriff's office and BNSF will investigate.
