A driver has died after crashing into a carwash near Willmar on Sunday evening.

The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. Sunday on Highway 12 in Kerkhoven, northwest of Willmar.

Shane Broten, 48, of Willmar died when his vehicle went off the road and into a ditch near the 15th Street intersection.

The Swift County Sheriff's Office said that his vehicle went airborne over 15th Street, striking the concrete base of a vacuum at Tam's Car Wash, before spinning and striking the carwash building.

Broten, a father-of-two, was pulled from the wreckage and taken to Rice Hospital in Willmar, where he later died from his injuries.

The sheriff's office said alcohol and drugs are suspected of being a factor in the crash, though the incident remains under investigation.

Tributes have been posted to Broten's Facebook page, with his family saying that details of his funeral will be announced at a later date.
