Driver dies after crashing into tree off of Interstate 35 in Pine County

It happened just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that happened on Interstate 35 in Pine County Sunday evening.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6:50 p.m. on I-35 in Mission Creek Township, with the Minnesota State Patrol reporting that the driver of a 2019 Chevy Cruz was traveling south on the interstate when he left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The 82-year-old driver, identified as Donald A. Welter, of Pine City, was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital but did not survive his injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and road conditions were dry at the time, the State Patrol said.

Twenty-four people have died on Minnesota roads so far in 2020. That number is down from 33 fatalities at the same time in 2019, per the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety
