Driver fleeing police rear ends school bus, 5 kids hurt

The driver is suspected of being drunk.

A driver fleeing police rear-ended a school bus in Robbinsdale Monday morning, sending five kids to the hospital.

The school bus – with 22 students on board – was on its way to the FAIR School Crystal when it was struck from behind, an email statement from Robbinsdale schools says.

Seven students were checked out at the scene, while five students were transported to the hospital for further observation, a news release from Robbinsdale police says.

No serious injuries were reported, the school district says, and they were all released from the hospital by Monday afternoon.

The chase

At around 7:10 a.m., an officer with the Robbinsdale Police Department responded to Highway 100 at 36th Avenue to a report of a vehicle in a ditch, a news release says.

The 28-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi Endeavor was being "uncooperative," according to police. When the officer told the driver to turn off his vehicle, the driver accelerated into traffic on Highway 100. The driver lost control and hit another vehicle.

The officer then started chasing the driver, who was driving "erratically," police said. The driver drove into the snow-covered median "to evade the officer," with police noting the officer wasn't able to continue their pursuit.

Officers reported seeing the Mitsubishi driving erratically on County Road 81, hitting several trees and a road sign, and driving the wrong way down eastbound 42nd Avenue North, the release says.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol's report, the Mitsubishi rear ended the school bus after it turned left from northbound Quail Avenue North onto westbound 42nd Avenue North around 7:37 a.m. The officer pursuing the Mitsubishi also hit the SUV to block it in, the report says.

At that point, the driver was taken into custody, with police noting formal charges including DWI, fleeing police in a motor vehicle and criminal vehicular operation are pending.

A different bus came and brought the rest of the kids to school, according to the school district.
