An 82-year-old driver died in a crash on Interstate 35W in Burnsville Sunday night.

The three-vehicle crash involved a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis and two semi tractor trailers on southbound I-35W just south of Burnsville Parkway around 6:50 p.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis, 82-year-old Richard J. Segers, of Savage, exited from Burnsville Parkway and was in the right lane of I-35W when a tractor trailer ahead of him began merging into the right lane from the shoulder.

Segers couldn't move one lane left due to traffic, so he was forced to slam on the brakes behind the merging semi. Another semi trailing the Mercury rear-ended it, pushing the Mercury into the back of the other tractor trailer.

Segers died after being transported to Fairview Ridges hospital in Burnsville. A 52-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Neither semi driver required hospitalization, although one driver did suffer minor injuries.
