A spilled drink in an SUV's center console sparked a chain of events that caused a rollover crash Sunday evening.
The Stearns County Sheriff's Office said a 2002 Ford Expedition was heading southbound on County Road 9 in Avon Township just before 6:30 p.m. on July 4.
A drink spilled in the center console, and the Ford's driver — 22-year-old Cody Tibbetts of Sartell — reached over to try to grab the drink, the sheriff's office said.
The vehicle drifted right, off the road and into the ditch. Tibbetts tried to get control of the vehicle, but over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll, according to the sheriff's office.
Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene to find the SUV in a ditch just south of Narnia Lane.
Tibbetts was treated and released at the scene of the crash. A 26-year-old passenger from Avon, Summer Pramann, was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A third passenger, who was not identified by the sheriff's office, did not suffer any injuries.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says distracted driving contributes to one in every nine crashes in Minnesota. Common types of distractions include smartphones, radios and music players, food and drink, GPS devices and passengers (including children).
