A cow was killed in central Minnesota after it was hit by an SUV whose driver had swerved off the road.

The incident happened on County Road 9 near County Road 21 in Eden Lake Township, Stearns County, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A 31-year-old Eden Valley man driving a Cadillac Escalade swerved off the road to avoid a vehicle that had pulled out in front of him from County Road 21.

The Cadillac went into into a small pasture, where it struck a cow.

The cow died from its injuries, with its owner arriving on the scene shortly afterward when informed by police.

The driver didn't require any medical attention, but his SUV took some serious front-end damage.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office said that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
