Driver who hit, killed Minnesota cyclist in Georgia found guilty

She was high on prescription drugs when she hit Ashley Block with her SUV.

A driver who was high on prescription drugs has been found guilty in the death of a Minnesota woman. 

Ashley Block, a 25-year-old graduate student at the University of Georgia, was biking with friends in September 2016 when she was hit and killed by the SUV Whitney Howard was driving. 

Howard, 31, was found guilty Tuesday of 11 of the 13 charges against her, including first-degree homicide by a vehicle, serious injury by a vehicle, and driving under the influence of drugs, court documents show

Charges against Howard said she was high on methadone and other drugs for anxiety and depression, and was reaching for her phone when she crossed the center line of the road and hit Block head-on, Online Athens reported

The other two people cycling with Block were also injured, one seriously

Block, who graduated from Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, was studying for her Ph.D. in anthropology and integrated conservation, her obituary said.

She was an avid cyclist, runner and triathlete, who loved music, art, cooking and animals. 

After her death, the cycling community in Athens, Georgia, paid tribute to her with a memorial ride
