Driving in western Wisconsin? State Patrol will be watching from the sky
Motorists guilty of speeding or reckless driving could be spotted from above in western Wisconsin this week.
The Wisconsin State Patrol plans to launch three Cessna 172 Skyhawk airplanes to keep an eye on the roadways. Weather permitting, the aircraft will be monitoring the following:
- Monday: I-90 and I-94 in Juneau County
- Wednesday: US 51 in Oneida County
- Thursday: Hwy. 64 in St. Croix County
- Friday: US 53 in Barron County
Pilots will be able to spot speeding drivers and anyone driving aggressively, then relay information about the vehicle to State Patrol troopers on the ground, who will make traffic stops and issue citations when warranted.
Drones will also be used to enforce traffic laws.
The cost of a speeding ticket in Wisconsin can reach up to $300, though more expensive fines are levied for more severe speeding violations and for second offenses within a year.
