More Minnesota motorists are apparently getting the message about the problem of drinking and driving. WCCO reports that drunk driving arrests are on the decline Minnesota.

Figures from the Minnesota State Patrol show that 21 percent fewer people have been arrested so far this year for driving while intoxicated, compared to the same time in 2013.

Detroit Lakes Online noted that Minnesota DWI arrests have gone down every year since 2006. In 2006 law enforcement officers arrested 41,951 drivers in Minnesota for DWI. The 2013 numbers statewide dropped to 25,719, which was the lowest in Minnesota history.

Despite the decline, law enforcement agencies note that a person is more likely to die in an alcohol-related crash during the holidays than at any other time of the year. Forty percent of traffic deaths during the holidays involve an impaired driver, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

In Minnesota, extra DWI enforcement patrols continue to run on weekends through the end of the year. Law enforcement officials arrested 578 Minnesota drivers over the past two weekends.
