Tragedy has struck at a beach on the South Shore of Lake Superior with the body of a boy who went missing while playing in the water found after a lengthy search on Wednesday.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, 911 dispatch was called at 1:39 p.m. with the caller saying two children were in the water. Seven minutes later, a 9-year-old girl was pulled from the water and revived on shore, while a 6-year-old boy was still missing.

A lengthy search came to an end at 6:59 p.m. when the boy's body was located with sonar in about seven feet of water.

Authorities say a group of kids was wading in calm, waist-deep water in Lake Superior at the mouth of the Middle River when the two children encountered a drop-off. By the time the other children informed adults, the boy was missing.

The identity of the boy has not been released and the incident remains under investigation.

Assisting in the search was the Wisconsin DNR, U.S. Coast Guard, several local volunteer fire departments and other people at the scene.
