Sweet! Duluth picks pop-up retailers to get free rent for the holidays

Treat seekers in downtown Duluth will have a new option on Monday. The Duluth News Tribune reports Cookie Temptations will open its counter in the downtown skywalk. And its owner won't pay a cent in rent for the new spot.

The gourmet cookie bakery is among eight businesses that will get free rent in the downtown area over the holiday season, and is pulling off a quick turnaround after being selected for the program on Friday.

The Northland's News Center reports that Duluth's Greater Downtown Council named eight businesses for the Pop-Up Downtown program. The program originally announced it would give free space to six applicants, but due to an overwhelming response, two more applicants were chosen to fill vacant space. All are required to be open by Nov. 30.

Fledgling entrepreneurs who sell everything from African imports to Lake Superior souvenirs to camping gear made the cut for the once-in-a-lifetime lucky break in jump starting a business. All of them are new to downtown.

“All have been in business, so they have inventory and are ready to roll,” said Kristi Stokes, the downtown council’s president.

The retailers selected all have experience selling products online, at various shows or through other retailers. Two stores, including Cookie Temptations, are opening second locations of existing businesses.

The council is offering the free storefronts in the hope that if the trial runs are successful, the owners will stay downtown.
