Sex trafficking in Minnesota is a bigger problem than most people realize – every day in the state, girls are bought and sold for sex, MPR reports.

Duluth law enforcement officials are trying to raise awareness about the problem, reports MPR, which talks with the mother of an 18-year-old who suspects her daughter was whisked off into a life of prostitution after meeting the wrong people on the Internet. Police are investigating.

Duluth Mayor Don Ness on Wednesday plans to sign a proclamation declaring January as Trafficking Awareness Month.

The Duluth News Tribune reported that last fall, authorities were able to rescue a 16-year-old who was being trafficked between Duluth and Chicago. She and others had been pimped and beaten daily, one official said.

Last year, 39 people told the Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault in Duluth that they were victims of human trafficking, the newspaper reported.
