Duluth's Homegrown Music Festival features 200 acts in 1 week

The festival started 19 years ago as a birthday party.

Duluth is getting ready to make some noise. Its 19th annual Homegrown Music Festival kicks off Sunday and features 200 acts in eight days.

The festival showcases all sorts of local talent from Duluth and Superior. Any music genre is welcome, too. The festival website says the main requirement for performers is being a working, local artist.

While the festival focuses on music, plenty of other local artists will attend – like filmmakers, poets, and dancers – as well as fans. Organizers tell the Duluth News Tribune it's expecting a about 5,500 people in all.

The paper notes attendance is higher when the popular Duluth band Trampled by Turtles plays – however, it won't this year.

The performances will be taking place at venues throughout the area. You can find the week's schedule here. The schedule includes poetry readings and the Homegrown Music Video Festival.

If you'd like to attend, you can get a $30 wristband and have access all week. Otherwise it's $20 to go on Friday or Saturday, and $10 to go Monday through Thursday. Learn more about the ticket options here.

The Homegrown festival unofficially started in 1999 at Scott “Starfire” Lunt's 30th birthday party. He had a bunch of beer and invited 10 bands – then it became an annual thing.

Eventually, it evolved into a city-wide festival. Since its start, Homegrown has been sold and donated. Now it's run by a committee of local artists.
