Dunkin' Donuts' return: Twin Cities shop could open by the end of the year

The Twin Cities will soon be runnin' on Dunkin'.

The first metro-area Dunkin' Donuts restaurant is slated to open by the end of the year, the Canton, Massachusetts-based coffee and doughnut chain announced Thursday.

It's one of 10 restaurants planned for the west metro after the company inked a deal with a new franchise group, Legacy Concepts, LLC.

"We are excited to expand the brand's presence in Minnesota and play an important role in the daily lives of people who live, work and visit here," Damon Dranchak of Legacy Concepts said in the release. "We have a passion and loyalty for the Dunkin' Donuts brand and look forward to opening our restaurants in the years to come."

Dunkin' Donuts left the Minnesota market in 2005, but returned last summer with a location at the Kahler Grand Hotel in Rochester.

Several more outlets are planned for northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin over the next few years. The fist shop – located near the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth – hopes to open in the late spring, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Construction began on the doughnut shop last month, Northland's NewsCenter said.

Dunkin' Donuts announced in January that it would consider getting into the Twin Cities market, and earlier this month the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reported an unknown franchisee was scouting possible locations throughout the metro area.

The company hopes to compete with Caribou Coffee, Dunn Brothers and McDonalds, the Business Journal noted.

The news was welcomed by some Minnesotans, while others weren't so excited.
