DuPont begins paying Minnesotans for trees killed by herbicide

Minnesota trees were among those killed by a discontinued lawn herbicide called Imprelis produced by DuPont, and some in the state are starting to collect money for the damages, the Pioneer Press reports.

The newspaper interviews a Woodbury woman who has wept over the sight of 19 dead or dying evergreens around her home, whose demise she blames on Imprelis. She is not cutting them down until legal proceedings unfold.

Imprelis was pulled from the market in October 2011, but the effects of it are still being seen. Imprelis is blamed for the deaths of thousands of trees in Minnesota and more nationwide, the Pioneer Press reports, and DuPont has agreed to pay $38,000 to Washington County and $381,800 to the Baker National Golf Course in Medina, as part of nationwide settlements that could hit $700 million.

DuPont has established a web page with information about Imprelis and a class-action lawsuit.

If you think your trees may have been damaged by the herbicide, the state Department of Agriculture has posted more information with useful links. The University of Minnesota also has a blog with more background about Imprelis.
