Dust off your golf clubs! You can hit the driving range this weekend

Driving on the ice may not be safe. But at some of the driving ranges you're good to go.

Unseasonably warm temperatures in Minnesota mean it's not a great idea to go driving on the ice.

But it also means some of Minnesota's driving ranges will be open for golfers for at least a few days – maybe more – starting this Friday. A lot of American presidents have been fond of golf, so maybe a visit to the range is an appropriate activity.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board announced Monday its Hiawatha Driving Range, Gross National Driving Range, and Columbia Driving Range will all be open from 10 a.m. until dusk on Friday, Feb. 17.

They're promising to stay open through Monday the 20th, which is President's Day. After that, they say they'll reassess their hours based on the forecast.

Yes, February is pretty early for golfing in Minnesota. But the folks swinging on Friday won't be the first of the year in the Twin Cities. Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids was open during our January thaw.

When will you be able to golf a full 18 holes?

Even that may happen this weekend.

A look at the Minnesota Golf Association's Course Openings page shows several with March openings, though with qualifiers like "Weather dependent – but looking good so far!!"

But one course, Tanners Brook Golf Club in Forest Lake, lists this coming Sunday as its opener.
