Five Minnesota companies rank among the best when it comes to accountability and transparency, according to Corporate Responsibility Magazine's 2015 list of 100 best corporate citizens.

For the second year in a row St. Paul-based Ecolab cracked the top 10, ranking No. 9 behind several well-known companies, including Microsoft at No. 1, Hasbro at No. 2, Johnson & Johnson at No. 3 and Xerox at No. 4.

The companies that made the list are rated in seven categories: climate change, employee relations, environmental, financial, governance, philanthropy and human rights, Corporate Responsibility Magazine notes.

"Our company values guide us to do what is right because we know that our work matters and how we work matters, too," Ecolab Chairman and CEO Douglas M. Baker, Jr. said in a news release.

The other Minnesota companies that made the list:

  • Maplewood-based 3M ranked No. 30.
  • Golden Valley-based General Mills ranked No. 39.
  • Austin-based Hormel ranked No. 44.
  • Minneapolis-based Target ranked No. 75.

Target was among a handful of companies on the list that was marked with a yellow card – a significant, but pending investigation or situation – noting the company's data breach and class-action lawsuit.
