Ecolab appoints Handley to president and chief operating officer

Thomas Handley is being promoted to replace Erik Fyrwald who left the company in April, the Business Journal reports. Handley joined the St. Paul-based maker of cleaning, sanitation, pest elimination and maintenance products in 2003. He was most recently the president of its Global Food & Beverage division and Asia Pacific Latin America businesses.

Thomas Handley is being promoted to replace Erik Fyrwald who left the company in April, the Business Journal reports. Handley joined the St. Paul-based maker of cleaning, sanitation, pest elimination and maintenance products in 2003. He was most recently the president of its Global Food & Beverage division and Asia Pacific Latin America businesses.

Chief Financial Officer Steve Fritze is also retiring and will step down Oct. 1 after 32 years with Ecolab, according to the Star Tribune. Daniel Schmechel, executive vice president of finance, is being promoted and will take over the CFO duties.

In July, Ecolab reported its second-quarter earnings jumped 47 percent and sales surged 74 percent following its acquisition of liquid filtration giant Nalco.

St. Paul-based Ecolab has agreed to sell all assets of its vehicle care business to Atlanta-based Zep Inc. for $120 million in cash, the Star Tribune reports. Zep makes cleaning and maintenance solutions for commercial, industrial, institutional and consumer end-markets.

St. Paul-based Ecolab plans to close its Grand Forks office next July, the Herald reports. The facility has 144 full-time employees who support accounting, customer service, human resources, information technology and other administrative functions related to Ecolab's Pest Elimination business. Layoffs could begin as soon as January. Some employees may be able to work from home or take other jobs at Ecolab locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois or Indiana.

The company's promoting Casey Carl to oversee the retailer's website, which has suffered two major crashes and numerous glitches since a revamp a few months ago.

The move is part of a restructuring plan as the St. Paul-based company takes over Nalco Holding Co. The Business Journal reports Ecolab expects it can reduce its workforce largely through attrition. Most of the eliminated postions are corporate administrative jobs. Ecolab also expects these changes to reduce the need for future postions and help reach cost-savings goals.

Ecolab Inc., the St. Paul-based cleaning and pest-control giant, says its net sales jumped 74 percent to $3 billion in the third quarter, RTTNews.com reports. Net income was also up 54 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.
