Elderly man dies after lawnmower tips, rolls into the Mississippi River

The accident happened northwest of the Twin Cities.

An elderly man has died near Big Lake after the mower he was riding tipped and landed in the Mississippi River.

The victim, 89-year-old Ralph Hermes, was found by a neighbor who was checking on him on Monday afternoon at his home in the 20000 block of County Road 14 in Big Lake Township.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott says that Hermes is believed to have been riding a lawnmower when it tipped over and rolled down a steep bank, landing in the Mississippi.

Investigators say there was a 15-foot drop near the end of his lawn to the river bank, with Hermes found in the river with his arm pinned beneath the mower.
