An elderly man was shot at least twice during a home invasion in Columbia Heights Tuesday night.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office says a 76-year-old is at Hennepin County Medical Center following the incident that occurred just after 9:30 p.m., and fortunately his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

The victim had just returned to his home in the 5000 block of Johnson Street Northeast when a man followed him in through his still-open garage door.

The robber immediately shot the homeowner "more than once" and "without making any demands," police said.

The shooter then searched the victim's pockets and stole his wallet, before fleeing on foot.

The description of the suspect is limited, but he is said to be black, in his early to mid-20s and was dressed in dark clothing.

Paul Sommer, of the sheriff's office, told WCCO: "A fairly brazen act, something homeowners fear. They just walk in through their automatic garage door into their house and before they can even turn around and close the garage door there is someone inside committing a robbery."

The Columbia Heights Police Department and Anoka County Sheriff's Office are investigating. Anyone with information should call 911.
