An elderly woman in Moorhead was killed when her vehicle was struck by a train.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the vehicle hit by an eastbound train on the 10 block of 14th Street South.
Inside the vehicle was an 87-year-old woman, later identified as Lila Hoyme of Dilworth, Minnesota.
She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Moorhead police are investigating the collision.
The issue of train and vehicle collisions in Moorhead is a significant one, with the city a major thoroughfare for freight trains including tankers bringing oil from the Bakken Fields in western North Dakota.
This increases the risk of collisions as motorists sometimes jump crossing barriers in an attempt to prevent delays on their journeys, though there's no indication that this happened in the Saturday incident.
In an op-ed for CNN last week, Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith said that Moorhead has been overlooked for federal funding to build underpasses beneath train lines that would alleviate congestion in the city.
She claims that the Trump Administration has been favoring typically "red" states with tough Senate races when allocating infrastructure spending.
