Elementary students taken to the hospital after school bus crashes

One student was airlifted from the scene after being pinned in the bus.

Several students were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after their school bus crashed north of Bemidji.

The crash happened when a car drove through a stop sign and hit the bus, causing the bus to lose control and swerve onto the shoulder and roll on its side in the ditch, the Beltrami Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Movil Lake Road and Irvine Avenue in in Northern Township.

One child was pinned inside the bus and had to be extricated by Bemidji Fire Rescue, the sheriff's office said, while many other students "suffered bumps and bruises" when the bus tipped over, a statement from Bemidji Area Schools said.

One student was airlifted from the scene, while five students were taken to the hospital by ambulance, the district said. The driver of the car that hit the bus was also taken to the hospital and is in serious condition.

The Bemidji Pioneer says 30 people arrived at the emergency room, noting most were quickly released. The student who was airlifted injured his arm, which was pinned between a bus seat and a window.

No students sustained critical injuries, the paper notes. All the kids on the bus were taken to Sanford Health to be checked out, and then they'll be transported to their schools, the district said.

The bus – Bemidji School District Bus No. 25 – was carrying many students from the Red Lake area, according to the Red Lake Police Department. The bus was going to nearby Northern Elementary School when it crashed, the Bemidji Pioneer says, noting students on the bus were also headed for Central Elementary or Paul Bunyan Elementary.

The hospital has set up a hotline for parents to call 218-333-6040 for more information.
