Emergency evacuation order accidentally sent to residents in multiple Minnesota counties

The alert was actually only for people at a Mille Lacs resort.

An evacuation alert meant for a small group of people at a Mille Lacs resort was mistakenly sent to residents of multiple Minnesota counties Wednesday morning.

A main gas line cut on Highway 27 prompted an evacuation of Mille Lacs Island Resort around 11 a.m. Wednesday. The alert was specifically meant only for people on the resort.

But the message was broadcast over the Emergency Alert System (EAS) in multiple nearby counties.

"This was on my radio in Sherburne County. Does everyone need to evacuate like it says?!" one Facebook user wrote.

In addition to Sherburne, people in Isanti, Crow Wing, Morrison, Mille Lacs and Wright counties left comments saying the emergency evacuation alert came over TV or radio.

This left some local authorities scrambling.

"THERE IS NO EVACUATION ORDER FOR ISANTI COUNTY," the sheriff's office there tweeted, adding it was trying to figure out where the alert came from.

"If you see an emergency alert about this gas line evacuation….it is NOT for Crow Wing County," the Crow WIng County Facebook page said, adding "NO residents of CWC need to evacuate. "

The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office also said it had been fielding calls about the evacuation order.

Turns out, this wider alert was just a mistake.

The Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office said in an update the evacuation notice "was inadvertently sent out through that [EAS] system." Anyone not at Mille Lacs Island Resort can ignore it.

"We are working to resolve that issue at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience," the sheriff's office added.
