Celebrity legal activist Erin Brockovich visited Fridley, where residents want more investigation of what they call a "cancer cluster." She said she wants more facts.

Residents in Fridley worried about an unusually high rate of cancer cases were visited by celebrity environmental and legal activist Erin Brockovich on Wednesday.

Her visit had been widely anticipated for weeks on a Facebook site dedicated to the issue, which was created by former Fridley resident Jason McCarty, the Star Tribune reports.

Fridley’s cancer rate is about 7 percent higher than the average for the rest of Minnesota. State officials suggest that is likely due to a disproportionate number of lung cancer cases caused by smoking.

Last July, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed and more than a dozen railcars carrying corn spilled into Locke Lake. Ten months later, neighbors tell KARE 11 the corn is causing foul odors and attracting more geese to the area. A railroad spokesperson says crews have already removed about 25 tons of corn, but aren't able to remove it all. A bike path that runs underneath the rail line also remains closed, but is supposed to reopen in July.

Off-duty Fridley police officer dies in motorcycle crash

"It's a sad day for Fridley," said Fridley Mayor Scott Lund about the death of Officer Barry Pankonin. The police officer died Tuesday after he was involved in a motorcylce accident near his home in Plymouth. Pankonin was a 12-year veteran of the Fridley Police Force and also served in the National Guard. Funeral arrangements are pending.
