Ethics panel sharpens its focus on Bachmann

The House Ethics Committee announced Wednesday that it will continue its review into alleged campaign finance violations from Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's failed 2012 presidential campaign.

The St. Cloud Times reports that the Office of Congressional Ethics found "substantial reason to believe" a violation may have occurred.

In its report the OCE found that Bachmann may have violated federal campaign finance laws and House rules by using funds from her leadership PAC to support her presidential campaign.

The Star Tribune reports that the OCE also found that Bachmann violated campaign finance laws and rules which bar the use of campaign staff to promote her book.

OCE investigators did not find sufficient evidence to substantiate that Bachmann deliberately didn't report payments to her campaign's Iowa chairman on Federal Election Commission filings.

Bachmann continued to maintain Wednesday that she has not violated any laws or regulations. Bachmann noted that the matter has just been referred to the Ethics Committee responsible for reviewing the issues.

She has said previously that the ethics complaint stems from political opponents.

Last spring Bachmann announced she would not seek re-election to the house.
