Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday – a day dedicated to celebrating the legacy of the civil rights leader.

Although it's a federal holiday where many people don't have to go to work, they're asked to honor King with a day of community service – organizers call it "a day on, not a day off," the King Center says. (If you're looking for a place to volunteer near you on Monday, click here.)

And many events are planned throughout Minnesota. Here's a look at some of them:

"The Power of Telling Your Story: 30 Years of Us" is a series of events Monday, starting at 9 a.m. with a youth rally at the Ordway Concert Hall in St. Paul, following by a march re-enactment and a celebration program. The program features remarks from Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, as well as Talila Lewis, the founder of Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf. If you can't make it to the event, it'll be streamed live on by WCCO.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Breakfast, hosted by the General Mills Foundation and The United Negro College Fund, will be held at 7 a.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center to celebrate Dr. King's legacy. The keynote speaker will be Deval Patrick, the former governor of Massachusetts, who will provide a message on this year's them: "Civil and Right." The event can be watched live online on TPT.

"Lift Every Voice" event, presented by the Minneapolis chapter of the NAACP, is being held at the Luther Seminary starting at 9 a.m. Monday. A series of programs will reflect on King's influence and ways people can learn from and live out his legacy. The keynote speaker is Nekima Levy Pounds, the president of the Minneapolis chapter of NAACP. People can watch the events on the seminary's YouTube channel.

"Race, Rap and Reality" – a convocation – will be held at the Foss Center at Augsburg College starting at 1 p.m. Monday. The event will feature musical performances and a keynote address by Chuck D – the co-founder of the rap group Public Enemy. For more information on the free event, click here.

Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board's annual celebration will feature a keynote presentation by Trent Tucker, district director of athletics at Minneapolis Public Schools and retired NBA player, plus live entertainment and a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The free event is being held at the Rev.
