Extra patrols on the watch for drunk boaters this weekend

30 percent of fatal boating accidents in Minnesota involve alcohol.

Boating with an open contain is legal in Minnesota, but boating under the influence is not – and police will be on the lookout for intoxicated boaters this weekend.

It's part of a national campaign called Operation Dry Water, a national campaign to increase awareness about the dangers of boating while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"When boaters chose to boat impaired they are endangering not only themselves but the many other boaters on the water as well," the campaign states.

The legal blood/alcohol content in Minnesota for boaters is the same as it is for drivers, .08.

Drunk boating is the cause for 30 percent of boating-related fatalities in Minnesota.
