Eye-popping ice pushing off Mille Lacs blocks highway

Part of Highway 169 along Lake Mille Lacs had to be closed on Sunday morning as strong winds blew ice off the lake and blocked a stretch of the Crow Wing County road.

Several photographs and a video of the road near Garrison were submitted to KSTP and are posted on the station's website.

A highway crew was called in to remove the ice on the highway.

After the months of sub-zero weather, Mille Lacs is not the only Minnesota lake with ice remaining on its surface. A number of lakes from the central part of the state north to the Canadian border also have a thick covering of ice. Some of them will likely still be iced over for the May 10 fishing opener.

The ice movement on Mille Lacs this weekend captured attention, but was nowhere near as dramatic as what was experienced last year. In May of 2013, WCCO had dramatic video of what it called an "ice tsunami." A wall of ice as tall as 30 feet came ashore along about ten miles of shoreline, pushed by winds as strong as 40 miles per hour.

FOX 9 said last spring's ice heaves moved like glaciers and caused damage to some homes and commercial buildings along the lake's southeast shore.
